A Recap from last night Teleseminar titled, Menopause & The Heart
Last night show was a good and I shared a lot of information dealing with
our heart and affects of menopause. I talked about May being American Heart Month and that this site provides a lot of information, tools an resources to help you understand and manage your health. Here is the link: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=1200000
Warning signs of a heart attack. Please see them listed below:
· Chest discomfort – Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
· Discomfort in other areas of the upper body – Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw and stomach.
· Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
· Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness
As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
I also said that we know our bodies better than anybody and pay close attention so we can identify the symptoms and seek medical attention. Because our symptoms differ from men a lot of times the doctor is not recognizing the symptoms to be that of a heart attack. This is why it is so important for us to recognize the symptoms early so we can get the treatment and prevent or delay a heart attack.
I talked about heart palpitations in menopausal women and the signs and symptoms associated. Heart palpitations and menopause are actually very common aspect of the change of life. Experiencing heart palpitations is a sensation of the heart pounding uncontrollably. Also, I shared some personal experience I had with heart palpitations.
About how our emotions can affect our heart health and shared information about a study that was done. Also, spoke about exercise, diet and the importance of it.
I referenced a couple of good books to read that will help us understand menopause and our heart. Books I recommended: Black Woman’s Guide to Menopause: Doing Menopause with Heart and Soul by Carolyn Brown you can pick it up at Target and also Amazon. Menopause and the Heart by Manuel Neves-e-Castro .
